Shit For Brains Couloir

April 6, 2016

Spring was on its way, allowing the snow pack to consolidate as warming temperatures allowed for melt/freeze cycles here in Summit County. With a bluebird day in the forecast, Lexie Anderson and I ventured outside of Arapahoe Basin’s inbound terrain in hopes of descending the Shit for Brains couloir. We planned to ascend a western ridge south of Grizzly Peak and traverse Black Mountain to reach the line from above.

After a brief skin we began climbing to reach the ridge to Black Mountain. Upon topping out we started traversing south to reach the start of the couloir. The traverse provided a bit of interesting terrain as we made our way towards the objective.

When we reached the top of the couloir we took in all of the views and prepared for the descent. A bit of a down climb to reach the start of the snow was necessary, and afterwards we worked out a plan, strapped in, and started the fun part. While the descent was not the powder we were hoping for, it did provide some great turns as we shredded from one safe spot to another until we exited the couloir. A few more turns later and we found ourselves at the bottom of A-Basin with wide smiles. It was nice to complete a line I’ve stared at for far too long and hope to get it in prime conditions in the future.
