Mosquito Range Splitboard Camping Trip

5/22/16 – 5/23/16

Another season of snowboarding and splitboarding was making its transformation into the phase Colorado backcountry enthusiasts love, spring. With a (mostly) stable snowpack, longer days, and warmer temperatures, spring gives us the opportunity to pursue bigger lines that we may have avoided during the the mid-winter. This particular spring was blessed with an abundance of upslope snow storms, which filled in areas that may have previously been unrideable.

Due to some steep parts with very slick and hard snow we had to switch to crampons to safely ascend two areas we deemed too dangerous to skin.

The last couple weeks had been filled with a few successful winter ascents for Jeff Kepler, Pat “Perry” Johnson, and I. With curiosity about the conditions on Mt. Bross, we decided to attempt the east slopes route in hopes of some good turns in it’s bowl below the summit. A short drive to our start and we were met with warmer than expected temperatures which raised some concerns about the quality and safety of the snow. We decided to proceed with caution and assess the conditions as we went.

Rode the ridges to ascend 5 Mosquito Range 13ers with Pat Johnson. Despite heavy winds, London Mountain, Kuss Peak, Mosquito Peak, Treasurevault Mountain, and Mt. Tweto were summitted quickly.
