Mohawk Lakes Traverse (Helen Mt. – Father Dyer Peak – Crystal Peak – Pacific Peak)

June 28, 2016

Temperatures began to rise and the remaining alpine snow was quickly disappearing before our eyes. Summer was finally beginning to dominate the high country. Pat “Perry” Johnson and I were eager to transition into approaches involving lighter packs and routes with┬ámore rock than snow. We planned for a full day in the alpine knowing that the weather would be bluebird and warm.

Longs Peak – Keyhole Route

10/11/15 – 10/12/15

Summer was fading away and fall was already in full force in the high country. Pat “Perry” Johnson and I decided it was time to knock out a Front Range 14er that we had waited to do until tourist season was over, Longs Peak. We planned to depart from the trailhead in Estes Park on a Sunday morning, camp at the Boulder Field right below the Keyhole, and summit Longs Peak the following day. This would hopefully ensure relatively low traffic on the route and allow us to enjoy an unfamiliar area without the congestion it typically attracts in the summer months. I talked to a ranger a few days before to make sure a campsite was available and work out any fees we would need to pay before heading up on the mountain. He informed me that the Trough section of the route contained both ice and snow so I decided it was a good idea for Perry and I to bring an ice axe and crampons to be on the safe side.

Mt. Edwards / Argentine Peak / Mt. Wilcox / Square Top Mountain A

September 25, 2015

With a beautiful Friday free for both Pat “Perry” Johnson and I, a stroll around some Front Range 13ers seemed to be just what the doctor ordered. T-shirt weather in the alpine doesn’t come around too often this late in the season and we relished the warm weather all day. We made our way from Peru Creek to the summit of Mt. Edwards and then we were off to Argentine Peak. After a quick break at the summit we headed to Mt. Wilcox via its rolling ridge. Descending from its summit and we were off to Square Top Mountain A.

Mt. Bierstadt / Mt. Evans Sawtooth Traverse

September 16, 2015

Looking to get our class 3 fix, Pat Johnson and I decided that the Sawtooth traverse between Mt. Bierstadt and Mt. Evans was good to go. We made our way from the trailhead around 5:45 AM and worked our way to the summit of Bierstadt. We did not waste much time on the summit with the mountains engulfed in clouds and a chilling temperature in the air.

Fletcher Mountain / Drift Peak Traverse

September 9, 2015

After a long month of working on summits in the Tenmile Range, Pat Johnson and I were both on the verge of completing the range’s peaks over 13,000 ft. With a clear and sunny day ahead of us we departed the trailhead above Montgomery Reservoir and onward towards Mt. Fletcher. After gaining the saddle between Fletcher and Quandary we quickly made our way to the summit. This marked my completion of summiting every peak over 13,000 ft. in the Tenmile Range in less than a year.
